John performs songs of many types, from a repertoire of more than 600 songs. They range from serious classical music to popular music and comedy, for example:

Classical or ‘serious’ music:

  • Oratorio : Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and St Paul, Stainer’s Crucifixion, Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary, Faure’s Requiem, Carl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs, Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb,  Bernstein's Chichester Psalms , Finzi's Lo, the full final sacrifice, Haydn’s Seasons and Creation, arias from Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio, arias from several more Handel oratorios - Solomon, Judas Maccabeus, Samson et al.

  • Operatic: bass-baritone arias from many Operas especially Handel and Mozart.

  • Art songs of the British Isles

  • Foreign Art songs – French chanson, German lieder, Italian arias

 

 Light music:

  • Humorous and musical comedy

  • Songs of the 50s, 60s and other 'easy listening '

  • Folk songs and ballads from all over the British Isles, and beyond

  • Spoken : duologues, monologues, poems, prose, comedy

  • Musical Theatre songs

  • Victorian, Edwardian, Music Hall

 

For particular occasions:

  • Songs accompanied by choirs (Ladies, Male voice, or Mixed)

  • Sea songs

  • Wartime songs – both commemorative & entertaining

  • Proms concerts

  • Christmas concerts

  • Music Halls and Variety Concerts

  • Duets and ensembles

  • Scottish songs for Burns Night and St Andrews Night dinners.

  • Compereing

....... also complete concerts along with other singers, ensembles and instrumentalists – focusing upon the enjoyment of the audience.

 

John has received first-class tuition and help from many expert musicians, notably Margaret Field, Maria Jagusz, Henry Herford and Hilary Harmer.
